Interesting note today on the Hardball Times website. The Mets are really really good at defense. Bravos? Not so much.

In other news, they still don't have a no hitter.

Does anyone know of radio station that streams Brave games? I used to listen to WRNL 910 in Richmond, but now they do the R-Baves instead.

At 2:05 PM , Blogger drewdat said...

Did you know?

Rich Hill's ERA is over 20 times lower than Mark Redman's?

Hm.

At 2:11 PM , Anonymous Nick said...

I'm pretty sure that, for the most, part MLB has cut out the free streaming of its baseball games since it's selling that particular service on its website. If you're looking for a list of stations that carry Braves games, go to braves.com/radio and follow the link near the top of the page.

Anonymous, if you want to listen to games, you can always try thegamelive dot com.

Looks like Aybar is hanging out with Otis Nixon in Boston right now. Tough break; we could use his bat.

This is not good news....but answers the question why Gonzalez didnt pitch last night...

OFF TOPIC...

I hope this isn't viewed as a political statement--I don't think it is and I don't intend it as such--but this article is in my opinion spot-on and well worth everyone's time:

Stu,

He lost me with this comment: "Canadian manhood does not suffer from an excess of testosterone."

Guess he's never watched an NHL game.

At 3:32 PM , Blogger Mac said...

I'll allow it under these circumstances.

Anyway, I think that hockey hair undercuts the violence.

At 3:36 PM , Blogger Mac said...

This is how you win games: The Braves have hit the most home runs in the NL (20) and allowed the fewest home runs in the NL (6).

At 3:46 PM , Anonymous Jeremy said...

I think the author of that NRO piece has watched one too many action movies.

At 3:50 PM , Anonymous Stu said...

jeremy,

I think he understands what a man's character is supposed to look like. It's a shame--fully proving his point, I might add--if you don't think real-life crises call for individual bravery.

At 3:57 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

From Brian J.

Several conservatives have publicly fantasized that they would have jumped out and tackled the Blacksburg shooter or fired on the Iranians. They seem to have trouble separating life from action movies.

In addition, their claim to "not be politically correct" is an excuse for bigotry or simple boorishness. See also Imus, Don.

(End rant)

I see that our old friend Joe Borowski lost to the Yankees this afternonn on a three-run HR by A-Rod in the bottom of the 9th. Have they started cheering A-Rod yet in New York? And I bet they miss Big Bad Bob.

At 3:58 PM , Anonymous Stu said...

Mac,

That HR-allowed figure is likely to increase tonight.

At 4:11 PM , Blogger ububba said...

I love the A-Rod drama.

Of course, if he goes 0-for-Boston this weekend, it'll be like nothing ever happened.

Yankee fans know he's great, but in his time here he has not done well in the biggest games or series.

Yankee fans are the ultimate "prove-it-to me" types. It may make for a joyless bunch of people, but that's how they add up the numbers around here. Beating Joe Borowski in April isn't the same as beating K-Rod in October. Sorry, it's just not.

At 4:19 PM , Anonymous spike said...

Come on Stu - that was a shameless bit of "blame the victim" from an internet tough guy. Mighty easy to call someone a p*ssy from the safety of your sofa. "If I'd been there, I sure would've shown that guy a thing or two..." What about the Holocaust survivor who shoved the door closed and got killed for it? How about the student who got an artery severed in his leg doing the same thing? I guess that was just too sissified for this d*uchebag. Alright, Mac - I'll stop and won't bring it uop again, but really - this is utter crap from some dick who would probably wet himself walking down a city street.

At 4:21 PM , Blogger AHWest said...

The Yankees fans here in my office in NJ recently referred to A-Rod as "Mr. April", and are still dreading his likelihood of choking in October. I'm just hoping that somehow Boston or the BJs can keep the Yankees from winning the pennant this year and thereby protect the Braves' streak.

At 4:26 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Haha, well said spike.

lando

At 4:29 PM , Anonymous spike said...

Well, Mr. April is the only thing standing between them and a much deeper hole at the moment. Hope they remember these 3 or 4 games he's carried them if they take the division by 2. But they are Yanks fans, so of course not.

At 4:50 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Okay, here's what I think is going to happen (I'll put this on the game thread header tomorrow). I have no contact information at Braves.net anymore; the guy currently in charge has never contacted me. I'm going to be moving the site to a new service ASAP; I have a couple of possibilities. At any rate, it will be on WordPress still and I have everything archived through a week ago today. I probably won't be able to save anything after that except the posts. Everyone may or may not have to re-register; I've never done this before.

Anyway, we're going to be on Blogspot for the next few days.

At 4:54 PM , Anonymous Nick said...

It's quite possible I will really regret saying this, but normally when it takes this long to report the test result, there's nothing wrong, so hopefully that's the case with Gonzalez.

There was another similar situation a couple years ago, and I can't remember who it was, but I seem to remember everyone thought the player in question was gonna have to be DLed, at least, but there was no info coming out for a day or more, and it turned out he only missed a few games.

On another note, I'm very glad we got the win last night. With Redman pitching today, it was sorely needed, especially with the Mets coming up this weekend. I fully expect us to take one from them at the very least, and probably two, but its good to get wins where you can, cuz you never know.

At 4:56 PM , Anonymous Nick said...

I remember who it was now. It was Estrada with his concussion after being run over by Darin Erstad.

At 4:58 PM , Blogger ububba said...

How 'bout another 8-6 win tonight?

We better score some runs tonight.

And no extra innings, please. If Redman has one big game in him, I'd love to see it this evening.

At 5:27 PM , Blogger beedee said...

sad to hear about Willie, hope he pulls thru, and i hope the Braves reach out to the kid.

At 5:27 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Tell you what, I'll turn off verification while the game is going on.

At 5:30 PM , Blogger Davey said...

As someone that works with websites and web desgin...if I may give some advice Mac...

Try to find a good server that supports Wordpress. There are some good ones out there, that offer great packages and set everything up there.

I know it's easier said than done, but there is plenty of info on the web should you get stuck somewhere. There are some great Wordpress plug-ins out there that will help moving over archives and maintaining permalinks....

But, will you get a new domain also?

At 5:36 PM , Anonymous Chuck G said...

Stu,

I've grown weary of the "culture of passivity" meme that conservatives have pushed for the past two days as some sort of explanation for this tragedy. It completely overlooks the facts that a) when you're sitting in a classroom, the WTF of a psycho serial murderer in the halls muddles all rational response, and b) consider your average classroom. If there's one exit point and it's guarded by a guy with an automatic weapon, you're screwed. Rushing him is probably a fool's game because it's an *automatic* weapon. I haven't seen the specs on the classrooms involved here but the classrooms I've been in (except the two-door large lecture halls) give you little chance for counteroffensive strategies.

Most of these people who write magazine articles that "understand what a man's character is supposed to be like" are compensating dorks in real life who would be the ones shitting their pants if the rubber actually hit the road in front of them, by the way. I'm getting really tired of every national tragedy becoming an excuse for the right to push the Real Manly Men meme.

I own bravesjournal.com. In fact, I am going to set that up to point to this site for the time being. I don't know yet if bravesjournal.com will be the top domain or if it will be something else.

At 5:44 PM , Blogger Robert said...

If you want a steaming audio broadcast of the game, you can try
http://www.1450wgns.com/

Starting listening to the Braves on that station in 1967 as a five year old, cheering for what seemed like the worst team in baseball...and I didn't care. I'm long gone from there, but they still air the games, and I believe you can listen to it from their site.

At 5:44 PM , Blogger Davey said...

That's good. Owning the domain means that you won't have to spend money on getting a new one...

At 5:50 PM , Anonymous Stu said...

That's funny, I get really tired of the Cowardly Leftist who thinks that just because he'd wuss out in a situation, "nobody knows what they'd do." You think it's a flaw of the conservatives that they're the only ones talking about this problem? Chuck G, spike, Brian J. (Imus is not a conservative, by the way), and whoever else falls in that boat, this is exactly the sort of scenario that puts our ideological differences in sharp perspective. You've got it backwards.

I can promise you this: If I were in that classroom, I'd have faught like hell to protect whoever else in the room I could. I'm thankful that there are others out there like that (we saw them with the guys on the plane who thwarted the co-attack on 9/11), and I hope I'm never reliant on you guys to rise to the occasion if someone I care about is stuck in a situation like that with you.

Being a man carries with it some responsibilities, and we've neglected teaching those as a society. That's the point of the article, and if you don't see it, you're part of the problem.

I won't say anything else on the subject on this forum--if you care to continue this, feel free to email me at vandystu@uga.edu.

Thank goodness for baseball. We've managed to keep this discussion civil, but I'm glad not to continue it.

Anyone surprised that Redman gave up a leadoff hit? Me neither.

At 6:41 PM , Blogger ububba said...

In order to survive a situation where a psychopathic killer came into my classroom with enough ammunition to waste a small village, I might rush the guy, I might play dead, I might try to jump out the window.

And I might get shot between the eyes, or in the leg, or in the chest or in the pinkie finger.

But I don't know for sure because I've never been in a situation exactly like that.

But I do know this: I would never, ever criticize or question anyone for what they did or didn't do in that situation.

At 9:46 PM , Anonymous Nick said...

I'm not sure who that dude was and what he did with Mark Redman, but I think I can live with that. That was just a brilliant performance by Hill. I don't know where the hell he came from, but he may already be the ace of the Cubs' staff. Think about it: he throws slow, sweeping curve balls and no pitch higher than 90 mph, so he's not very likely to have arm problems (Wood and Prior), he doesn't appear to be batshit insane (Zambrano), and he doesn't suck (Lilly and Marquis). Cubs fans must think they stumbled into a dream world of some sort.

At 9:50 PM , Blogger ububba said...

Yep, good luck with the fix, Mac.

I will be at Shea tomorrow night & looking for a big effort from Hudson.

Any Bravos fans come on by Mezz Section 1, behind home plate. I'll be wearing the black Georgia cap, scorebook in one hand, a cold one in the other.

At 10:50 PM , Anonymous NY METS said...

I hate to say it, but braves pitching is looking very sharp this year...hudson has a era under 1 right now! I cant say i saw that much of a rebound from him. If you guys can stay healthy your team will be one to reckon with...much to my dismay :(

Anyways, good luck tomarow ( but not too much luck) and i hope for another good series.

Mac: If your really that pissed that i posted here I'll leave you alone. All i ask is if our teams make the playoffs and face eachother, that you let me post durring our series.I mean its only fitting. we have history here..lol

Cheers

First of All, the game stunk last night. That may be the only time all year that Redman has a decent outing.

Also, on all the VT talk earlier.
Two things stand out from what was being said. While I generally agree that much of our society is a little wussified (is that a word), I would never (like ububba said) pretend to know exactly how I would react. Hypothetically speaking I can say that I would hope that I reacted to save lives. That is the ideal reaction. The other thing I want to note is that Don Imus is not a conservative. I'm not sure where that is coming from. If anyone has heard his opinions ever, they would know this. He is liberal and that is his right, but for some reason some news outlets are trying to spin him into a conservative. I don't get it.

Now Back to Braves Baseball!!!
