Game Thread: April 27, Braves at Rockies

New site soon, I promise. So, has anyone heard if the humidor is still working?

I actually just read somewhere that the Rockies have only hit 3 homeruns in 338 ABs at home this year. They are going to beat their previously low of 9 for April set last year (knock on wood!). Looks pretty good to keep the long ball down (assuming Redman doesn't find a way to get to the mound in the series).

At 4:46 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Hopefully the humidor is working. Chucky is a flyball pitcher. But I think he is going to have a bounce-back outing after suffering a let-up in his previous two. Go Chucky...

At home so far this year, the Rox and their opponents have scored 97 runs in 10 games (Rox 42, opponents 55). On the Road, the Rox and their opponents have scored 84 runs in 12 games (Rox 41, opponents 43). That totals 181 runs in 22 Rockies games, or 8.22 per game. So we get a raw park factor of 9.7 / 8.22 = 1.18, a bit higher than the Humidor Era average.

Mind you, most of their road games have been in pitchers' parks- LA, San Diego, and Shea, with only Arizona as a decent hitters' park. So that probably overstates the park factor just a tad.

Best guess: the humidor is still there, and Chuckie's gonna need it.

And for my next trick, I'm gonna see if I can make some good fake blood and get a million dollars.

At 6:08 PM , Blogger Mac said...

If they've gotten the homers under control, I wouldn't mind a high-average, high-run context with lots of doubles and triples. Sounds fun.

I just always wish we had last at-bats in that place.

Yall see this story? Y'know, I gotta say, I kinda enjoy it. Sweet that it helps bust the 'roiders, but even sweeter that the dude is a Mets employee. I'm probably a bad person though.

Washington leads the steM 3-2 after 5 1/2 innings, on a HR by Austin Kearns.

At 8:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please tell me that "the Lemmer" (is he contractually obligated to be referred to exclusively as the Lemmer because they NEVER use his real name)is not part of the future of Braves radio.

At 8:24 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

the lemmer likes it when guys swing the bat aggressively.

At 8:25 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

AWESOME!!! IT'S JUST ME. *TAKES OFF PANTS*

At 8:29 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hate double plays...

At 8:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It is puzzling to me how it is even possible for someone to be hitting .714 with two outs/RISP.

At 8:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Unless, of course, he has like four at-bats in that situation. But he is in the middle of their lineup, so it's not possible that the Rockies have been doing that bad offensively, is it? I mean, they went double digits on the Mets the other day.

At 8:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seven hits in three innings and no runs? It's going to be one of those games. And I hate those games.

Good news, everyone: Nationals beat the steM 4-3.

At 8:58 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jeff Francis is looking a lot like a mid-90s Tom Glavine, at the moment. I don't think he's gotten the ball middle-of-the-plate/in yet.

Also, it appears that the Rockies are the ultimate suck-ups to "the children." A
6 p.m. local start time for tomorrow? Sup wit that?

At 9:07 PM , Blogger Mac said...

I don't want anyone to think that I am apostate from the Church of McCann, but I love KJ.

At 9:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love Kelly.

At 9:08 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Finally, some runs! Thanks, KJ and Renty!

At 9:08 PM , Blogger Mac said...

And Willy Taveras' arm makes Juan Pierre look like Roberto Clemente.

At 9:10 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's about time. 10 hits and 2 runs to show for it. We better pour it on, just to avoid a game that shapes up like the previous one.

At 9:13 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, that throw was atrocious.

At 9:19 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow Mac, that's a real compliment to Pierre. I never thought Pierre can throw AT ALL.

Nice play Matt!!!

At 9:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Making Langerhans look even more useless than he already looks.

At 9:29 PM , Blogger marspr said...

The baby Braves are having a pretty good night. For Rome, Jordan Shafer, a third rounder from a few years ago, hit his fourth homer and is currently hitting over .350.

At 9:32 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous, are you Alex?

At 9:32 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Matt Harrison threw six shutout innings and Brandon Jones (not free yet) went deep twice. Lerew threw seven innings without allowing an earned run and Escobar had two hits and two rbi's.

At 9:33 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is it just me, or is this game going at a pretty quick pace?

At 9:34 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's for "the children", Dustin.

At 9:34 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chucky is pitching a damn good game. This should erase some of the doubt on him recently. Honestly, I never have any doubt on the kid.

At 9:36 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

WILSON! HE HAS CREATED A RUN!

At 9:36 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually I think Gameday is working quick for a change.

At 9:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just wondering, does Brandon Jones play leftfield or centerfield in the minor? I know he can play both, but I believe he mostly plays leftfield in the minor...

...I am thinking more of one Jones replacing another Jones...

...WILSON FINALLY!!!

At 9:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

KJ reaches base three times tonight already...how far higher can his OBP go?

At 9:40 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Brandon plays left for Mississippi but I think he played a little in center last year.

At 9:44 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

ANDRUW!

At 9:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice, six runs is more like it considering how many hits they are having tonight!!!

At 9:46 PM , Blogger marspr said...

The altitude helped Frenchy there.

At 9:46 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Frenchy!

At 9:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sweet!!! Tom Martin!!!

At 9:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, Tom Martin...I never thought I would ever see that guy ever again...

At 9:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, inducing a ground ball for once. Seriously, if he's pitching for them the way he did for us, the degree to which he will get shelled in that ballpark is absolutely mind-boggling.

At 9:56 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Red Sox hitters have absolutely no fear in facing Marino. They absolutely kill him since that Game 4.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH CHUCKY!!!

At 9:57 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would have caught that.

At 9:57 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Someone please call the bullpen!

At 9:59 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok, seriously, what's wrong with Chucky...

At 10:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tonight Bobby is Captain Hook...I wish that we had Paronto for situations like this. When will he be back?

At 10:00 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Something has gotta be wrong with Mariano. His era is Redmanesque.

At 10:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kali--again proving that he is not such a great pitcher under pressure....

At 10:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think I am the only one who misses Furcal's defense...

At 10:04 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kali strikes again.

At 10:04 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

These weak hits up the middle are getting very annoying.

Stephen, I miss Paronto BIG TIME.

At 10:04 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Damn Yates--this is beginning to feel like 2006.

At 10:05 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Only Bobby on this planet believes in Kali...

...can we get him out?

At 10:06 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mariano Rivera has yet to record a save this year.

Maybe the magic wore off finally.

At 10:07 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Furcal's OPS is under .500

At 10:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

WOW!!! FINALLY AN OUT!!!

At 10:08 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I miss Furcal's defense big time. I am sure the pitchers are as well...

At 10:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Finally!!

In addition to Paronto, I am hoping that we get Startup or Stockman up from Richmond--the only way Yates is useful is to eat innings when it no longer matters.

At 10:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

They said on TV that Paronto should be back when his stint on the DL expires.

At 10:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really think losing Pat Corrales is killing this team. Last year he always put the defense right where they needed to be. I remember reading Horacio Ramirez praising him for that late in the season.

Now he's gone and whoever replaced him sucks. The Braves play for a pull, it's hit up the middle. They play up the middle, the ball it hit in the gap. They shift, the ball is hit where the third baseman would normally be. Langerhans move towards center, the ball is pulled down the leftfield line.

It's getting old.

At 10:12 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

That was kind of a stupid way to put that.

What I meant was he shouldn't have to stay on the DL more than his alloted 15 days.

In other news, I found it in the last place I looked.

At 10:13 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wilson is having a good night. Seriously, I don't have much concern over Diaz, Wilson, and Thorman. Langy is actually the only one who is hopeless in my opinion.

At 10:15 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gonzo is coming in next...

At 10:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love Kelly Johnson. What an AB.

At 10:18 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

ok, I must admit I love everything about Edgar's hitting.

At 10:19 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Renty!

When KJ is on, he is a force....otherwise, HoRam is pitching against the Royals as we speak...

At 10:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, HoRo is having three Ks in four innings, that's amazing.

At 10:21 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Chipper!!!

At 10:22 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chipper!!

At 10:22 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

NICE!!! Five runs lead is beautiful.

At 10:31 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice, Gonzo is looking good tonight. Velocity is good, control is good...I think he is definitely healthy.

At 10:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bobby, please don't use Soriano with less than a three runs lead, he can not handle a wide lead...

At 10:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not the best start to the 8th...

At 10:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

KC--I fear that you are right--have to hope that Soriano recognizes that in Coors Field this is still not a massive lead....

At 10:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice!!! Stephen, that's why I think Soriano will be a GREAT closer.

At 10:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

DP--KJ is getting it done....

At 10:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Isn't it nice to have a real bullpen again...

At 10:46 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

That was kind of inexplicable. I don't think he needed work, really. Unless he does, I agree...using him when it's not a save (or a hold) situation really shouldn't be done.

At 10:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey!!! He made OK contact that time!!!

At 10:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Langy's BA drops lower!!! How far lower can it gets?!

At 10:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Langerhans can't get a hit in Coors, then maybe we should Blanco or Brandon Jones....

At 10:53 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bobby is not taking any chance tonight...why not two nights ago!!!

At 10:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wickmania! Wheres the Banner?

At 10:55 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Why is Wickman in in a 5 run lead? Paging Steve Colyer...

At 10:56 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

God, how many geriatrics do they have on that team? They just keep trotting them out. Finley, Martin and now John Mabry.

At 11:02 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, Reitsma is relieving HoRo for Seattle...wonder if the Mariners will trade Putz to us for Kali?!

At 11:04 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe the Mariners will drag up Ken Ray....

At 11:05 PM , Blogger Jay said...

bases loaded for Atkins...not good.

At 11:06 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Damnit!

At 11:06 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok, Bobby, you are not using your best relievers in save situation, and you are using your best relievers with a five-run lead. I don't think I will ever understand the old man.

This is really stupid.

At 11:07 PM , Blogger beedee said...

you have to be kidding me. this is rediculous!
WICKMANIA is looking Kolbous

At 11:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Damn!! We have already one 9th inning collapse this week....

At 11:07 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You all are seeing the WORST of Bobby in the last two games. Totally stupid.

At 11:07 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

You...must...be...kidding...

At 11:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ah, the curse of Dan Kolb strikes again.

At 11:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think I have said enough, don't bring in closers in non-save situation. They are just not wired for that. Yes, closers like Wickman are not wired for base-loaded with no-out situtation either.

At 11:10 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wickman is not Kolb, Bobby is just using him at the wrong situations. Bobby needs to know his relievers better.

At 11:10 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Helton is 2/3 against Colyer...

At 11:11 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Why didn't Colyer start the inning? I think I remember somebody saying something about that...

At 11:12 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the Braves lose tonight's game, I will hate Bobby all over again.

At 11:12 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

de ja vu?

At 11:13 PM , Blogger Jay said...

I think ball three was a strike!

Three pitchers in the ninth...that's just sad.

At 11:13 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Since when has Bobby become Tony LaRussa? Man his bullpen handling is criminal...

At 11:13 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

This is embarassing.

At 11:14 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

You gotta make Helton hit. The worst he can do is tie it. Walking him, especially with that awful pitch, is a crime.

At 11:14 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

So much for Colyer--I have more confidence in Moylan, which is not saying much. This game is beginning to remind me of 2006....

At 11:14 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rob, Bobby sucks in handling relievers. He has proved that so many times in the past 15 years. He is still a great manager though, but his in-game decisions suck, especially in how he uses his relievers.

At 11:15 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

COME ON PETER MOYLAN! Please don't blow this.

At 11:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bobby really needs to pay attention as to when he uses Wickman. In the last two games, he has shown he has no clue.

At 11:16 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

My heart just threw up in my stomach.

At 11:16 PM , Blogger Jay said...

BRAVES WIN!!!

I LOVE YOU FRENCHY, THANK YOU!

At 11:16 PM , Blogger marspr said...

YES!!!!!

At 11:16 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Wow. Go Braves.

At 11:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you Frenchy, you saved me from another heart attack...

At 11:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Frenchy!!

First place!

At 11:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bobby sucks.

At 11:17 PM , Blogger marspr said...

Truth be told Frenchy should have caught the one earlier also.

At 11:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

for that, i think i will forgive frenchy for a few of those times he acted stupid at the plate...

but only a few of them

At 11:18 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Moylan: Australian for "clutch"

At 11:18 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

ok. let's hope the jitters are over with this one (fat chance).

At 11:19 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

I hardly call a potential game winning blast to the wall clutch.

At 11:19 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

This comment has been removed by the author.

At 11:21 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whew! Jesus Christ on a crutch! Can we not have anymore of the last-inning pitching mishaps for awhile?

At 11:21 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can we call a Moylan save a dingo?

-URLHIX

At 11:22 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Moylan better go kiss the humidor

At 11:23 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You can say that again Petros.

At 11:24 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is that Moylan's first major-league save BTW?

At 11:25 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Yes it was.

At 11:26 PM , Blogger beedee said...

that was ugly but i'll take it

At 11:26 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dingo!

At 11:26 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah, his first save in hopefully his last save opportunity

At 11:31 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I figured Bobby was just trying out the 7-8-9 roles and it just got away from Wick at the end. All in all, a great game for us. 17 hits! Whoo! I'll take singles sprinkled around the ballpark all night long.

At 12:29 AM , Blogger Jay said...

Tony LaRussa almost got into a fight with Bernie Miklasz of the St.Louis Post dispatch. Apparently there was a cheap shot about the Cubs in today's paper and LaRussa didn't want to be associated with the comment and refused to talk with the Post Dispatch and Miklasz wouldn't drop it and finally they got into each other's faces and right before the video ended, Miklasz said "do you got a problem with me?!"

I have no idea what was said, I didn't get the paper this morning and the article has been removed from the site.
