Game Thread: April 24, Braves at Marlins

No news on the new site front. I'm hoping to have something in the next couple of days. Meanwhile, if you just hate Blogger, I can set up a new auxiliary backup at WordPress.com, which would at least have the familiar settings.

Today's Game Thread Video is dedicated to Ryan Langerhans' extra base hit total, because it doesn't exist either! Sorry, I'm on a slow connection here.

This is very funny, and actually quite on point.

So I'm confused, is the old site (http://www.bravesbeat.com/bravesjournal/) totally gone now? I mean, is this site just temporary or do I need to change my bookmarks?

This comment has been removed by the author.

That site is being replaced with a new site, which I think will have a basic bravesjournal.com URL. Until that's ready, this is the temporary site so I won't be down for any length of time.

If you have a bookmark on your computer, change it to http://bravesjournal.com. Until the new site is ready that will forward to wherever the active site is.

Thanks for clearing that up Mac.

Call me a creature of habit, but I much prefer to old familiar settings. Looking forward to seeing those again.

Not to bring this up again, but at metsblog.com, there is a link to an article lobbying for Atlanta to trade for Cliff Floyd. I don't think this accomplishes much as Floyd is prone to injury, but he'd probably put up better numbers on the DL than Langerhans would actually playing. I still like Murton.

You are probably wondering why I was at metsblog.com. I wanted to see how bad they felt after we beat up on them this weekend, and today was the first chance I had to do so.

Let's go Mark Redman? I'm scared.

At 3:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have no problem with Cliff Floyd per se, but what are you willing to trade to get him, seems to be the unstated part of the equation. Surely CHI could get more than we'd give someplace.

At 3:52 PM , Blogger beedee said...

i really don't see the point in trading for Floyd. The moves reek of desperation and reminds me of the B.J. Surhoff deal. no thanks give me choco crisp or another young blood

At 4:11 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It would be criminal to move for Floyd without giving Diaz a solid 2 month runout. Braves are 2-0 on Tuesday. I smell victory.

At 5:39 PM , Blogger beedee said...

what about that Reggie Willits kid from the Angels?

At 5:45 PM , Blogger beedee said...

hans will get the start in LF. ergh!

At 5:49 PM , Blogger ububba said...

As much as I hate the DH, I always said that Cliff Floyd was in the wrong league.

Floyd would be a great left-handed pinch hitter, but I don't see him as an option for this team.

I'm usually a patient man, but I agree that we should be getting very close to the idea of giving Diaz the spot in LF.

Diaz: In 479 career PAs, he's 297/337/438, 775 ops. (18 career BBs)

Langer: In 473 career PAs, he's 245/339/383, 722 ops. (91 career BBs)

Diaz doesn't walk, but he can hit. Langy can't hit, but he does walk. Diaz is a bad LF, but he hasn't embarrassed himself so much this year.

I do expect Bobby will give Langer some time to get some hits, but I hope it's not too much time.

Oh hey, the game is on TBS tonight...

At 6:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

What's the news on Mike Gonzalez?

At 6:04 PM , Blogger Jay said...

And KJ and BMac are both back in the lineup...also so is Langy.

At 6:06 PM , Blogger beedee said...

good start KJ!

At 6:06 PM , Blogger Jay said...

He's apparently fine, he pitched well last night.

With their deficit cut to three runs, the Braves realized their most promising event of the night via the scoreless eighth inning that Mike Gonzalez provided. Last week, his left elbow was providing some discomfort. But as his fastball was clocked in the mid-90's, the left-handed reliever showed indications that he's healthy.

"He threw as hard as he ever has," Cox said. "They didn't have any good swings on him."

good thing we're getting to this kid early, Redman needs all the help he can get.

once again Langy shows his consistancy

Great start for Redman, let's see what he can do with it.

What's it going to take for Bobby to get rid of his platoon fetish? The batting Langerhans against right-handers clearly ain't working. Use Diaz everyday or better yet:

FREE BRANDON JONES!

At 6:26 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You've got to love it when two pitchers with ERA above 8 match up.

At 6:27 PM , Blogger beedee said...

i guess batting practice has started.

At 6:27 PM , Blogger ububba said...

I guess Redman just can't handle prosperity either.

At 6:29 PM , Blogger beedee said...

i'm not sure if i'll be able to endure this game.

At 6:35 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Didn't Redman give up 5 in the first against the Marlins last time? He can go in the same boat with Langy, at least he's consistent, consistently bad.

At 6:36 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know if I should cry or laugh. It was a four run lead, and it didn't even last one inning.

I wonder if Lerew is ready...

At 6:36 PM , Blogger csg said...

Redman and Davies must be sent down. Call up a long reliever and lets try Villareal and Cormier when he's ready

At 6:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm sorry but villareal is nothing to write home about either

At 6:38 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't tell who is worse, Langerhans or Redman...

At 6:38 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Well, now both starting pitchers have an ERA above 10 for the year. What was the over/under on this game anyway -- 20 1/2, or something like that? It is time for Cormier. He's deserves a shot when he is ready based on the spring he had. I will not be able to watch this whole game without sticking a fork in my eye.

At 6:40 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

So any predictions for the final score? I figure we're looking at probably 15 to 12 us before both starters are out and a final score of 21-18.

At 6:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

ok better question, who is worse, Redman or Vanden Hurk?

At 6:42 PM , Blogger beedee said...

james, it would be close if both had equal touches, but you have to give Redman the edge just because he serve up so many meatballs.

At 6:42 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

let's hope Redman is hooked before Vanden Hurk

At 6:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

man, this guy only got out of the first inning because langy sucks terribly

At 6:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

at least redman got on base unlike langer

At 6:43 PM , Blogger beedee said...

that was between Hans and Redman

At 6:44 PM , Blogger beedee said...

a walk off touchdown would be nice

At 6:44 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Crap. The Marlins might have won the game by taking that kid out. I bet Redman just gives up runs in spurts now and stays in till at least the fourth.

At 6:46 PM , Blogger beedee said...

watch, this kid is gonna go 4 innings of shut out ball

At 6:47 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Give Fredi credit for being proactive and getting Vanden Hurk out of there, since anyone else couldn't have done any worse. Hope Cox comes to the same conclusion on Redman.

At 6:47 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Andruw had connected on that first swing he hits that ball to Fort Myers

At 6:52 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

At least Vanden Hurk had the excuse of never pitching above Single-A before this year. Looks like he will be booking a ticket back soon.

At 6:53 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

"even on base redman finds a way to hurt us, that's a gift!"

That's not fair. He got on base. Blame Chipper and Andruw for hitting weak pop-ups with the bases loaded.

Should have gotten more than two, but I'll take it. How bad would it have been if the Braves had scored no runs at all?

At 6:54 PM , Blogger csg said...

at least Langy gets to lead off next inning!!!!

Langerhans is now 2-34 on the year. If he got hits in each of his next six AB, he would get to the Mendoza Line.

Since his last hit on April 11, he has reached base once by a walk and once by a HBP, while striking out nine times.

We have 1-2 players every year struggle horrifically at the plate.

Langerhans still needs to be razed to the gorund and his plunder looted.

At 7:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Redman is a worse waste of Braves $$ than Albie Lopez.

At 7:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

this game is hilarious - i am loving every second of it

both teams should agree to let a position player pitch some this game - it couldnt get any worse

At 7:18 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fredi is proactive and pulls Vanden Hurk quickly and keeps his team in the game.

Meanwhile Bobby waits until he is a day late and dollar short and Redman blows another lead. Why is he still in exactly?

At 7:18 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Through yesterday, Commando Cody Ross was hitting .356 .420 .644 against the Braves. Overall, he is a .230 .293 .431 hitter.

At 7:19 PM , Blogger beedee said...

i think albie got $3.5 million to make 3 starts and ride the pine for the rest of the season, but your point is valid.

At 7:19 PM , Blogger Mac said...

That's for his career; he's hitting better this year.

At 7:21 PM , Blogger csg said...

any reason as to why the Richmond stat sheets show McBride having 1 game start? By the way his numbers look a lot better there

I don't even think Shame Reynolds was this bad for us.

At 7:21 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mac, I gotta say it: Might you need to add Redman to the Latin motto at the top of the banner? I'm thinking that as bad as Langerhans is, I really dislike Redman more...
-Jeff M.

At 7:23 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Uh-oh. Redman coming out means that the parade of the horribles are going to be troted out: Peter Moylan, Steve Coyler, Tyler Yates and maybe even Oscar Villarreal.

At 7:23 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

And if Langerhans is Carthage to the Braves' Rome, I'm fairly certain that Redman is at least a Barbarian in our midst...

I think Adam LaRoche might be a better starter than Mark Redman.

At 7:28 PM , Blogger beedee said...

At 7:39 PM , Blogger beedee said...

that had to hurt

At 7:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yea, it hurt. But I'm not sure it hurts as much as the vomit that comes up when I see Redman (and yes, apologies for sharing too much information).
-Jeff M.

At 7:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark Lemke will apparently be on the radio for the Rockies series. I would rather listen to 9 Mark Redman pitched innings before I would listen to one pitch of "the Lemmer"'s call.

At 7:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know what's stupider than "good cut". How about, "base hit ball four".

At 7:46 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

McBride still walks too many, even at Richmond. When he quits walking so many, he'll probably be fine as either a reliever or a starter (the stuff is there).
-Jeff M.

At 7:47 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Langy, I grew up in Richmond. I'll be happy to let you know where all the good restaurants are.

At 7:47 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

McBride needs as many innings as possible as quickly as possible so he can get straightened out and back up here with the big team ASAP.

At 7:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know that his future is in starting, though.

At 7:48 PM , Blogger Jay said...

I believe that was some of Australia's finest. He has to hide it somewhere from Wickman and Paronto.

At 7:48 PM , Blogger Mac said...

I'll point out, as I have before, that Moylan was the best hitter in the league he played in in Australia. Australian baseball -- not very good.

At 7:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nice double play by Langerhans. He's near perfection at the plate continues.

At 7:50 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

poor Langerhans - its just painful to watch him bat. For some reason watching Redman suck is humorous to me, but watching Hans just hurts

At 9:06 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Intentionally walking a guy who is two-for-2007 is one of those moves that ought to get you fired in the middle of the game.

At 9:08 PM , Blogger Mac said...

I haven't read the comment yet, but Wickman was already warm, it was a one-run game with nobody on and two out, so he might as well pitch.

At 9:09 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Pardon me while I de-lurk, but what on earth would possess anyone to walk Ryan Langerhans with two outs and an obvious pitch-hitter coming up next. Good lord that had to be one of the most mind-erasing decisions I've ever seen. Not that I'm sad about it ;-D

At 9:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It will be especially nice to get a win when Redman pitches. Now, if the Mets can play a few more innings and then lose...

At 9:15 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...
