Game Thread: April 29, Braves at Rockies

I would have a game thread video here but all I can think of is John Denver, and I'm not going there.

Any chance McCann will get a day off today?

At 8:06 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I certainly hope so. Bobby is wearing out everybody early. He is over-using Wickman and Soriano; Andruw, Chipper, Edgar, and Frenchy haven't have an off-day yet; McCann has started 20 out of 23 games and is slowing down recently...or maybe Bobby is saving the off-days until the summer heat comes.

Actually, resting position players (except Frenchy last year) is one aspect which I believe Bobby is very good at. However, I think he needs to do a better job on not over-exposing Wickman and Soriano.

Has anyone else mentioned that Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux, and Millwood all pitched yesterday? That was weird for me.

At 9:31 AM , Blogger Jay said...

KC,

You make a very good point about give our guys some off days, but right now none of those guys are really showing any effects of tiring. All of those guys are hitting extremely well right now, especially Renty, Chipper and Frenchy but I wouldn't mind seeing Chipper getting a day off soon.

But then that brings up who will take his spot, Orr?? I don't think anyone wants to see that. And that is one of the main reasons why I would love to see Escobar come up. He's having a great start to the season and he can play both shortstop and third base.

Escobar: .308/.337/.410 1 HR 12 RBI in 19 games.

Also I think Salty has made everyone forget about last season, the year he's putting up so far is amazing and in just 19 games too.

Salty: .348/.444/.696 6 HR 13 RBI

And one more note, FREE BRANDON JONES!

Jones: .321/.370/.571 4 HR 17 RBI 4 SB in 21 games.

Breaking news:

Randy Moss traded to the New England Patriots in exchange for the Pat's 4th round pick. All that is waiting is a physical which he is in New England now.

At 10:16 AM , Blogger Dave said...

Wow... I did not expect Moss to end up in New England.

At 10:19 AM , Blogger Jay said...

Also Seattle traded Darrell Jackson to San Francisco for a 4th round pick

From last night's discussion...

Agbayani has been tearing up the NPL (Japanese leagues) for a few years now under Bobby Valentine. Wasn't he managing the Mets during much of the time in question?

At 10:44 AM , Blogger Jay said...

Josh Hancock, 29, of the St.Louis Cardinals died last night in a car crash in St.Louis.

At 11:54 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

But then that brings up who will take his spot, Orr?? I don't think anyone wants to see that.

Obviously beating a dead horse here, but Betemit would come in real handy about now. He could give any of the infielders an off day without just giving up on the position for the day.

And yeah, I know he hasn't hit yet but he will.

Robert

Personally, given Chipper's recent injury history, I wouldn't give him a day off. I'd just wait until something broke and then let him rest and heal then.

McCann, though, is a catcher and all catcher's need regular rest. And in addition to the regular rest, they need other days off, too.

I do wish that Bobby wouldn't choose to give McCann and Johnson the same day off, however. And certainly on the days that McCann sits, Diaz and Johnson should both be in the lineup.

YES!

Those Packers love their Hokies...

They take David Clowney, WR.

At 12:57 PM , Blogger ububba said...

If there's a good Kyle Davies, let's see some of it today.

Hope we got on our hitting shoes.

At 1:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Redman's starting today, isn't he?

At 1:03 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don Sutton, the National's play by play guy, just compared Carlos Beltran to Ryan Langerhans. No joke.

At 1:11 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Apparently Josh Hancock was teammates with Tim Hudson at Auburn.

At 1:23 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

David Clowney to the Packers! woo woo!

At 1:24 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Didn't see the earlier comment about Clowney, but man I'm happy he got picked. I can see him being a 3rd Wide Receiver super deep threat some day.

At 1:25 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

AND Brandon Frye! Have fun blocked for that Cavalier down there.

At 1:40 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Josh,

Next year's draft should be fun with first rounders Adibi, Hall and Ore to name a few. We're going to be great this year. Who do u want to start at QB?

Oh and Troy Smith was drafted by Baltimore.

At 1:41 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I watched Hancock when he played at Auburn, bumped into his college pitching coach this morning before it broke. Sad sad day.

At 1:46 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

The only person I would like to see have a little more of a break is Bob Wickman. I like how we had Soriano in in a 4-run lead. I think we also got the fourth run in the ninth, which may have meant he was warming up in a save situation. I don't think Wickman needs to be in every Atlanta Save situation we have. Let Soriano or Gonzalez go.

I hope we see good things from Kyle Davies. I think McCann gets a rest in this day-game-after-a-night-game situation we have right here.

Go Braves.

At 2:04 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Remember, Thursday was an off-day; nobody should have been tired last night.

I would like to note that there have been players drafted named "Usama" (alternate spelling of "Osama") and now "Orenthal" (like OJ Simpson).

At 2:05 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Additionally, Bennie Blades has a son old enough to get drafted? Man, I'm old.

At 2:14 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Well...that's a bad start Kyle.

At 2:15 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Great throw Pena!

At 2:16 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Phew, nice recovery Chipper.

At 2:23 PM , Blogger Jay said...

That curve was great...not many times do you see Matt Holliday unable to pull the trigger.

At 2:28 PM , Blogger Jay said...

The Almighty THOR!!!

At 2:29 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, I think you're talking to yourself. :)

Nice hit by Thor there. I can't really watch the game. I got a ton of stuff to do right now.

At 2:31 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Rob,

Yeah, I was starting to think the same thing, hahaha.

At 2:38 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Davies is horrible.

At 2:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Quit walking batters, Davies!

At 2:45 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

My goodness, Davies...

Can we, uhh, get someone who can pitch?

Looks like they're gonna go to Villarreal.

At 2:46 PM , Blogger Jay said...

I liked Davies, but enough is enough. We get nothing out of our 4th and 5th starters except for disappointments.

At 2:49 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

I agree with you, Jay. Does Davies have options? I'm sure Villarreal can do just as good a job, if not better.

At 2:54 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

LANGERHANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At 2:54 PM , Blogger Jay said...

LANGY!!! a standup double. Good for him.

At 2:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

He dood it. Langerhans dood it! All the way up to .071!

At 2:55 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

He could double his BA today...

Thatta boy Langy! Come on, Kyle. Prove your worth somehow.

At 2:55 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, I was sure they were gonna pinch hit for Kyle. They're leaving him in?

At 3:14 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thorman and Langerhans have our only two hits. Our pitcher's ERA is 7.11 (currently). And yet I still feel like we have a pretty good chance today.

(Okay, Andruw just doubled and ruined my point. Nice going.)

At 3:16 PM , Blogger Jay said...

There we go Thor!

At 3:36 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

I love watching Kelly turn a DP, he's really done a great job coming into the position.

At 3:46 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thor's really throwing the thunder around today.

At 3:47 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Thor! Pena! Langy! Hey-o!

At 3:48 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Ok, I was watching the draft, we're tied? Can someone please recap?

At 3:48 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

jay,

Glennon is just... awful. I don't know that Whitaker is any good at all, and I suspect he's not. Holt sucks too as far as I can tell.

I dislike Glennon more than most VT people because I have a friend that tutored the guy, and he was completely unbearable. Most of the football players are dicks, but at least fake being nice. Glennon was just a total ass. Example: When my friend's girlfriend came to meet him, Glennon hit on her and called my friend a "faggot". Yeah... he sucks.

I guess I would like to see Whitaker or Holt get a chance just because Glennon was just so miserable last year. Ah well. Just give it to Ore and rely on Hall, Adibi, and others to return fumbles and blocks for touchdowns.

AND HELL YEAH FOR BEING TIED NOW! Vulture has a chance!

At 3:49 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Chipper rocked a single, Andruw lined out, Francoeur hit a double to the right field corner, Thor hit a ball up the middle to plate 2, then.... something.... then Langerhans hit a sac fly to score Thor.

At 3:50 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

On Langerhans,

you know it's bad when a sac-fly might "get you going".

At 3:51 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Don't be so negative, hate king. He roped that ball. It was just right at Tavarez. I'm seeing a lot more hard-hit balls from Ryan. His second at-bat was just a little grounder to second, though. The other two times he's hit the ball hard.

At 3:53 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

The something was a single by Pena in between the Thor single and Langy sac-fly.

Too bad the Vulture can't vulture himself out a win today.

At 3:53 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Woooo! Thatta boy Chipper! Hey-o!

At 3:55 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Alright, why the heck is Chip Caray been in love with John Mabry all series? All series, "John Mabry this, John Mabry that. John Mabry can hit great off the bench. John Mabry will play another 5 years becaue he can hit off the bench. I wanna have John Mabry's children."

At 4:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess because he knew him when Mabry played for the Cubs?

Go Langerhans. I still think Diaz should be the everyday starter, but congratulations to Langy for getting that elusive first RBI before May.

At 4:03 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Josh,

I feel pretty much the same about Glennon. He was mediocre at best all season. I think Whitaker can be good and I LOVE Tyrod Taylor. Nothing to worry about with defense(of course) and our running game but if they do give the starting job to Glennon, we got a problem.

At 4:09 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Unassisted? Jeez. That sucks a lot.

At 4:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

wow......there's something you don't see every day. That SS is killing us

At 4:10 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

And he'll lead off the next inning. Lemke's Law in full effect.

At 4:10 PM , Blogger ububba said...

Can you freakin' believe that?

At 4:11 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chipper has hit into a triple play before- 6/15/96 against the Dodgers. But he's the first Brave ever to hit into a UTP.

At 4:12 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Well that sucks. I liked it better when Furcal did it against St. Louis.

At 4:12 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

that play was absurd

At 4:13 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Wow, only 12 in regular season history?

At 4:13 PM , Blogger ububba said...

I think the unassisted triple play is one of the rarest things in baseball. Aren't there only like 10 such things in the history of baseball?

At 4:13 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow. I just visited Wikipedia, and Chipper's UTP is already there.

At 4:14 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

12, close ububba.

At 4:14 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Good. Glad they hit him. He deserves it. :)

At 4:14 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

At 4:16 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Nice little catch there by Frenchie.

At 4:16 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Great catch by Frenchy.

At 4:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If there's a bright side, we've lost the last 2 times we've turned a triple play ourselves.

Nice diving grab there by Francoeur.

At 4:17 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Fellas, we are slingin' the leather today.

At 4:22 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

It can't be said enough that Kelly Johnson looks like a natural out there at second.

At 4:23 PM , Blogger ububba said...

I remember getting my Street & Smith's baseball yearbook back when I was a kid in the early '70s and there was a bit on the rarity of UTPs.

They had a big thing on Ron Hansen (who had the previous one at that point) and another thing on Bill Wambsganss, who's the only guy to do it in the WS.

Of course, at the time, it didn't occur to me that it's mostly just a lucky play for the defense.

But Chipper hitting into 2 TPs in his career? That's pretty crazy. That's almost like Torre hitting into 4 DPs in one game.

Oh, and let's win this damn game.

At 4:24 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Haha, did one of you edit that Wikipedia page on Craig Wilson?

At 4:24 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Andruw's gotta be the best ugly hitter I've ever seen.

At 4:25 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Andruw was huffing on that one.. damnit. But I guess you gotta send him...

At 4:25 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

DAMN IT!

At 4:25 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Terrible call from what'shisname at third base. You can't send Andruw there, especially with nobody out. Yes, we can blame him, Joe.

At 4:25 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dammit, why did Snitker send Andruw with nobody out?

At 4:26 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

HAHAHA. Craig Wilson the superhero. Love it!

At 4:26 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Yikes...

At 4:27 PM , Blogger ububba said...

You can't send Andruw there. Sorry.

With zero outs in a tie game, if that play is going to be close at all you have to hold him. Bad move.

At 4:27 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Thank you, Mr. Atkins.

At 4:27 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

BRAYAN!

At 4:28 PM , Blogger ububba said...

Way to pick him up, big boy.

At 4:47 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Does anyone here live in State College, PA by chance? I'm doing an internship there this summer. Need to know awesome stuff to do there (other than driving to Harrisburg/Altoona/Pitt/Philly)

Dustin:

TBS had him in the mid-90's. 95 on the one that got Mabry.

Craig Wilson still slumping. How good would we be if Wilson, Langerhans, and Diaz were hitting?

When did McCann's average get down to .291?

At 4:49 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Kelly Johnson is so fucking good. (man crush)

Kelly Johnson is just amazing this year. Honestly, the man-crushes you could have on this team...

Alright! big 3 bagger there. Kelly is hot fire right now.

At 4:51 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Clint Barmes shows why he isn't the Rockies SS any more.

At 4:52 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks James.

Kelly Johnson is still my hero.

At 4:53 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really like Kelly Johnson. I was a bit mad when JS let Marcus walk for nothing, but KJ is impressing so far.

At 4:54 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

joshtothemax, state college = penn state. if you're into bars and the college scene, have a blast.

At 5:11 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

NICE HANDS! Holy shit.

At 5:11 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Renteria- not a shortstop or even a very good simulation.

At 5:12 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Renteria couldn't have done anything with that play, and most shortstops wouldn't either.

What the heck is up with Bob Wickman?

At 5:14 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think I see actually see Cox aging in the dugout, like the guy who picked the wrong Holy Grail.

At 5:16 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Gonzalez not avalible tonight?

At 5:17 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Most shortstops make the play cleanly and more time and get the force at second. Renteria was slow to get there and then dropped about his fifth ground ball of the series.

At 5:17 PM , Blogger Joshtothemaxx said...

Yates can throw 97?

At 5:19 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Francoeur is rapidly approaching McCannian "I have to do everything by myself around here" levels.

At 5:21 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Mac, most shortstops don't make a play like that. That play was almost a base hit, and he kept it in the infield. There's not much more you can do.

It's almost getting pointless to defend every little play that Renteria doesn't make, and even more when there's not even a play to be made.

And where are my Thor haters today?

At 5:24 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, for the love of...

At 5:24 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Most shortstops do make plays like that because they don't take so long to get to the ball. The reason it was a difficult play was that Renteria is (a) so slow he has to cheat extra to turn double plays and (b) so slow it takes him longer to get into the hole. Furcal makes that play without breaking a sweat.

At 5:26 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

90% of professional SS make that play and get an out.

At 5:27 PM , Blogger ububba said...

Thor makes a rookie mistake. Hope it doesn't kill us.

At 5:27 PM , Blogger ryan c said...

renteria has hurt us tremendously in the field this year, and with kelly playing 2nd well, and thorman coming around, i cant think of a position for him. by the way, runner on 2nd, noone out, and we dont bunt? madness.

At 5:29 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not usually a big bunt fan, but in extra innings, a guy on second, and no outs .... even at Coors Field ... I'd have to say bunt.

At 5:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

That was fast. Well done, Kali.

Man, just think if the third base coach hadn't sent Andruw in the 8th. Oh well. When you walk 13 batters or whatever it was, you always put yourself in bad situations.
