Game Thread: April 25, Braves at Marlins

As I've mentioned I'm in an APBA keeper league. It's pretty deep, 20 teams, 40-man rosters. Anyway, I usually lose so in last year's draft I decided that I'd just take Braves because if I'm going to lose I might as well lose with players I'm rooting for. I took McCann with the ninth pick in the first round and also took KJ and McBride.

So it actually worked out pretty well and my team is suddenly a contender, so I went back to my "when in doubt, pick a Brave" strategy this year. Only this time I wound up with Paronto and Kali. Hm.

Langernote: In case you didn't know, Baseball-Reference is updating during the season now. Here's the Braves page. Note that Langerhans has an OPS+ of negative thirty. Sweet Jesus.

No video today, slow connection.

On the bright side, Hudson's ERA+ is 627.

At 11:56 AM , Blogger Unknown said...

Wilson's pretty bad. 26 OPS+. Diaz isn't that much better: 43 OPS+.

Also, label me as someone who loves B-Ref, and I'm even happier this year that they've got in-season season compiling.

in-season stats* compliling.

I wouldn't put langerhans on waivers. he would still be a decent defensive 4th outfielder. He isn't really starter good but he isn't as bad as he has been this last 20 games or so. Bobby has almost infinite patience, see Mondesi, Jordan, but at some point in time he is going to have to make a lineup change. LF and 1B shouldn't be a drag on your offense.

Thorman had a good game last night. He needs to play more.

At 12:54 PM , Blogger reaganman said...

I know this is kinda useless, but imagine if the Braves still had Giles. He is doing really good like I figured. Imagine that with KJ in LF. That leaves no weaknesses other than the need for another starting pitcher (which is really our biggest need as far as I'm concerned).

The Mets are losing, 6-0 in the bottom of the 3rd. Mike Pelfrey just got pulled after giving up a 3-run homer to John Mabry.

Tim Hudson is now the league leader in ERA(0.62) now that Rich Hill got shelled last night by the Brewers. The next closest is Brad Penny with 1.37.

So...Josh Fogg, the Rockies PITCHER has as many hits through 4 innings as Langerhans has all season...

10-0 Rockies, haha!

At 1:20 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Langerhans is going to turn it around. I can feel it. :)

So, our pitching could definitely be better right now. The Mets have a 133 team ERA+, and the Braves only have 117. But, the Braves are much younger, so I like our future.

At 1:44 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

So where do you think we'd be with Marcus Giles still in our lineup at 2nd base (he has a .338 average and .375 OBP). That would have put KJ in left field and in leadoff. We would almost certainly be tops in most offensive categories. Ahh, the things we must do for money...

Who is more major league-ready HITTING wise...Salty or Brandon Jones?

Also, why are they so reluctant to let Salty spend a little time at 1B?

At 1:52 PM , Blogger Alex Remington said...

Salty's worth more to us at catcher than anywhere else. The more time Salty spends at C, the higher his trade value. His trade value took a hit last year; he's been doing a good job building it back up, but he'll have to convince people he's legit.

As soon as other major league clubs believe he's a legitimate major league hitter who plays catcher, we'll be able to get a very, very nice return for him. This would be more valuable than simply playing him at 1B and hoping he'd outhit LaRoche's 2006, which at his age isn't at all guaranteed.

At 1:53 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

We are reluctant to move Salty to 1st right now because it would hurt his trade value - if that be what the Braves ultimately decide to do with him. Also, they don't want to bring him to the majors because he needs to get at bats every day - platooning him just wouldn't be able to accomplish that task.

At 1:58 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

good point about trying to increase Salty's trade value...can't help but imagine the possiblity of a trade involving him to TB...for...CARL CRAWFORD.

Also, I'd like to see us call up Brandon Jones at some point this season (a la Charles Thomas) a couple years ago to see what he can do and how he fits into our long term plans esp. since Andruw is probably not comin' back.

At 2:04 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Bamachum,

I couldn't agree with you more.

FREE CARL CRAWFORD and BRANDON JONES

At 2:07 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Or we could trade for... Rocco Baldelli!

At 2:10 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Either one would be fine...but i'd still prefer Crawford. ;)

At 2:14 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Or we could trade for... Rocco Baldelli!

Yay! Another OBP sinkhole who can't take a walk!

At 2:15 PM , Blogger egb said...

I think the incredible two-header catcher is still the best bet. Alternate days Salty C/McCann 1B, McCann C/Salty 1B.

At 2:18 PM , Blogger egb said...

This just in:

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his fifth and sixth homers Tuesday for Double-A Mississippi.

Salatamacchia hit just .230 with nine homers in 313 at-bats in his first year in the Southern League. As a repeater, he's currently at .379/.471/.776 in 58 at-bats. Whether he's a first baseman with the Braves or a catcher elsewhere, he's going to be a quality major leaguer.

At 2:23 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

As much as I would like to see Salty playing in a braves uni I think we would get the best return by trading him as a catcher. Great hitting catchers aren't common.

At 2:42 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Indeed. It's a nice problem to have. I would love to accomodate both, but Salty's value is highest, obviously, as a catcher. I wonder what in the starting pitching realm he would go for.

At 2:49 PM , Blogger Mac said...

I believe Rob just quoted Beck's "Loser", a nominee for our next Langerhans Film Festival.

At 3:01 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since it's pretty much a given that Andruw won't be back in 2008, and since "we'll just slide Langerhans into CF" is a real non-starter right about now, what's the rumor mill saying about center field in the post-Andruw era?

-1 to anyone who answers "Baldelli", BTW.

At 3:01 PM , Blogger Alex Remington said...

I don't think we should rush Brandon Jones. No need to start his arbitration clock ticking before he's ready.

At 3:12 PM , Blogger Alex Remington said...

I think Salty's barber might have something to say about our CF situation...

But it's not impossible that Francouer gets slotted over there.

At 3:16 PM , Blogger ryan c said...

havent thought of the alternating of the 2 between 1st and catcher. that's a brilliant idea. lets send that one to scheurholz.

At 3:19 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

In line with the What if Marcus Giles talk --- what if we signed Glavine last winter. A double whammy since with loss to Mets & our gain. The Mark Redstick experiment would never occurred. That is the game the Sox/NYY play.

Langernuts batting slump is no anomolie. He finished 2006 with an Orrlike .241 BA. You are what you are. When they show the baby braves photo in 2015 - no one will know who the guy is.

At 3:27 PM , Blogger Andy said...

I don't think there was enough money for Giles and Glavine.

At 3:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

If it hadn't been for the money tied up Hampton and the hope that he would be able to pitch this year, I would hope we would have signed Tommy Glavine...it sure wouldve been nice to see win #300 in an ATL uniform.

Also, no Rocco Baldelli...all we need is another injury-prone player, with a low OBP. Yes, his potential is great, but potential is a dangerous word and already have enough players where we are still banking on their potential (Jeff, KJ, Davies, Thorman, etc.)

Again, I'll say it...CARL CRAWFORD would look great in a Braves uniform, he's still only 24/25, plus he's possbily the BEST ATHLETE in the world...fwiw.

At 4:09 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Mac,

HA! I didn't even notice it.

At 4:19 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Guys, the Baldelli thing was a joke. Stu likes Baldelli, but there's this guy that HATES Stu talking about Baldelli. So lately, Stu's been comicly talking about getting Baldelli. There you go. I guess it wasn't funny since I had to explain it.

At 4:19 PM , Blogger beedee said...

I don't really want to think about who is going to replace Andruw. I want to savor every moment we have with him in CF. He's the greatest, I couldn't imagine him in another jersey.
Baldi isn't worth it, and the name Claudell Washington keeps appearing when you look at Crawford.

He did...43, I remember telling you I didn't think he did.

That was me, Jay. I knew I was right dammit!

At 7:37 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

2 was my number in high school. I never notice major league players' numbers. I do know that Andruw's is 25 and Chipper's is 10, only because it's been drilled in my head for the past 10 years.

(Alex R. here)

I don't want to jinx it but the $4 I spent on Huddy at my bid draft a few weeks back is the best $4 I ever spent.

At 7:39 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Also, I can't seem to get "Alex R." set? I miss the old site.

At 7:41 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Hudson is dealin. This is the kinda game I love to watch. Hudson goes 7, Soriano comes in the 8th, Wickman in the 9th. Hopefully we can score a couple more and put it in the hands of Colyer or Moylan.

At 7:43 PM , Blogger Dave said...

Not even the legend known as Cody Ross can hit Hudson

At 7:45 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's been a good night at the plate for Langerhans.

At 7:47 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Alex, choose "Other" and fill in the information that way.

This should be the last or next-to-last game on Blogger.

At 7:48 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

What's the deal with Cody Ross? Does he murder Atlanta or something? I remember Mike Redmond for Florida always murdering Tom Glavine.

At 7:48 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

(Alex R.)

At the beginning of April, I was convinced the most important thing we would need is another bat, say a 1st baseman, heading into the Summer/trade deadline...but, in looking at this team, it maybe a reliable 3rd starter since I am not completely sold that Chuck James can match Huddy and Smoltzie.

To an earlier comment on Glavine, we could have made that happen but I don't want to open a can of worms.

At 7:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Langerhans is due. He's gonna hit a six-run homer pinch-hitting for Hudson.

At 7:50 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't know that James had changed numbers. I haven't seen him pitch on TV yet. I listen to radio about 95% of the time. I wonder why he switched. 43 is a great number. I thought he was shooting for the spot right between Jackie and Hank.
I liked 27 for Johnson too. Someone needed to rehabilitate that number for Atlanta after Lonnie Smith and that walk loving Australian lefty.

At 7:52 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Walk loving Australian lefty. Damian Moss?

At 7:53 PM , Blogger Dave said...

I agree that this has been one of Langerhans' better games...

thank you! I could picture him in my mind but couldn't get the name.

At 7:54 PM , Blogger Jay said...

Jeremy,

Oh ok...sorry bout that.

At 7:55 PM , Blogger Dave said...

Wow...Damion Moss. Totally forgot about that guy.

At 7:55 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Yeah, I commented on something Alex R. wrote on his 2002 NLCS about Moss. At the time, besides the walk rate, he looked really solid, like a sure thing. Good thing the Braves turned him into Ortiz before he imploded.

At 7:56 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Oh good. Glove Boy's in the game.

At 7:57 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

At 7:57 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Hypothesis: Hudson is throwing a spitter. Discuss.

At 7:58 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK who sucks more Craig Wilson or Ryan Langerhans ???

At 7:58 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

IIRC, Moss had a no hitter going into the sixth inning against St. Louis and had to be pulled because he had already thrown 120 pitches or something ridiculous like that. I was a fan. It's too bad he flamed out.

At 7:58 PM , Blogger Unknown said...

Ya know, it might be a good thing Hudson is in the game right now. I wasn't for it earlier. Our bullpen was exhausted last night.

At 7:59 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It doesn't sound like a splitter. I bet it's the stout infield defense that's making him look so good.

At 8:01 PM , Blogger Mac said...

Ugg.... It's our job to root for Hudson to get to stay in and finish the CG-SO. It's Cox's job to recognize that he's FRIGGIN TIRED and take him out, either before the inning or after the first single, or even, I don't know, after the SECOND single....

This one should have been a win, and we should be leading the division right now.

*sigh* first blown save for Wicki.

Wickman shouldn't ever have to come in with bases-loaded and no outs!

Well, Wicky ain't perfect.

What an incredibly bad time to blow your first save, but then again, Bobby just left Huddy out there too long.

I'm gonna go in a corner somewhere and cry.

we lost our first series and we continue to play .500 ball lately.

I mean, i feel like we won the game but not the outcome. 8 innings of dominance and then a ninth inning of poop

Cant blame wickman, 0 outs bases loaded, i mean, there is only so much he could have done, the only thing ithought of, was at least maybe soriano cuold have struck out the side? but thats like russian roulette with that guy too. should have never been in that spot, i mean, we all want huddy to go the whole way, but its sickening, he has been LIGHTS OUT, im just scared this effects him next start mentally

I really like Bobby Cox, and even as I was watching the game, my mom was in the room as Cox was taking Huson. I said, "Hey, that guy is one of the greatest managers of all time."

But I swear, that's a dumb decision. Pitch up, single. Pitch up, single. Take him out? No. Pitch up, single. Wow...

That inning would have been different if Chipper Jones had been standing where he is suppose to.

Damn. Just damn. That's a tough loss.

I said that Hudson was on a short leash after the lead-off single. Too bad I was dead wrong and he was allowed to stay in after throwing 110 pitches to give up two more singles.
